It has truly been a challenging and surreal time for all of us over these past few months. Being in lockdown has allowed us to reflect on the things we normally take for granted that we cannot currently access. For many of us, one of these things is having the salon open to keep our locks looking and feeling great.

Growing out your hair is easy enough to handle, however, dealing with visible regrowth is another story. While we normally recommend a professional stylist to touch up your roots, the current state of things may not allow for this to happen any time soon.

In this blog post, we discuss a few different temporary fixes to help you disguise your roots until the salon re-opens.

Say NO to at home colour kits

First things first – we strongly recommend that you avoid trying to cover your roots using any sort of “at home” boxed colours (this includes regrowth kits).

Hair colour – especially permanent colour – should always be chosen and applied by a trained professional. The results can vary dramatically from what you see on the box, which can end up being extremely costly to fix.

On top of that, box colours can really do damage to your hair – ask yourself whether you’re prepared to risk complications like scalp burning, allergic reactions and even anaphylactic shock.

Hide your roots with a headband or scarf

There’s a reason why hair scarfs and headbands don’t go out of style… they have been utilised for years to cover up regrowth!

Headbands and scarves are the perfect hair accessories for hiding your hairline, and give great coverage when your roots are showing.

Dry shampoo is your new best friend

As well as prolonging hair wash day, dry shampoo is ideal for helping disguise regrowth. Particularly effective for blonde and lighter hair, applying dry shampoo to the roots will soften your hairline, and also absorb excess oils.

If you don’t have any dry shampoo handy, talcum powder works almost just as well on lighter coloured hair.

Try a sleek pull-back style

By slicking back the hair and creating a ‘wet look’ appearance, the hair will look darker, blending the roots and making regrowth less obvious.

You can also purchase hair mascara from the supermarket to apply on top of this, which will further disguise your grown out roots.

Chuck on a hat

Similar to headbands and scarves, hats are an easy solution for hiding your regrowth.

They also work double time to protect your hair and reduce further fading by blocking out harmful UV rays when you’re outside.

Experiment with textured braids

Braids are great at deceiving the eye into seeing more texture and dimension in the hair.

Try experimenting with different styles of braids along the hairline – this can help to disguise your regrowth and give the illusion of a more dimensional colour.
