Getting that beautiful beachy hair not only takes a lot of effort, but is generally not good for your hair health when heated styling tools are involved.
Luckily, heat isn’t the only way to get gorgeous curls and waves – there are plenty of methods out there for achieving the same results without the need for heat.
If you’re wanting to take a break from heat, or you don’t have your usual styling tools handy, we’ve put together our top four best heat-free methods for getting beautiful curls and beachy waves at home.
Braid your hair
Ideal for: straight hair
One of the easiest methods out there for achieving waves without the heat is to braid your hair at night time and sleep with it in overnight. Be sure not to braid it too tightly for a loose beachy wave look.
The next morning, gently undo the braids and apply your favourite hair oil or serum to tame the frizz, and lock it in with a light hair spray.
Scrunch your hair
Ideal for: textured hair
For those who have been blessed with textured hair, this is one of the simplest techniques to bring out those curls and waves (that you may be surprised you even had!).
After washing your hair, apply a mousse and evenly distribute from your roots downwards – take some time to really “scrunch” the product in to encourage those waves. Then, spray some sea salt spray from the mid-lengths to the ends and repeat the scrunching method. Leave to air dry naturally or use a diffuser on a low setting to gently hair.
Use a headband
Ideal for: medium to thick hair
You only need three things for this method: a fabric headband, a texturizing product and patience! To achieve headband curls/waves, lightly dampen your hair with a texture/sea salt spray.
Next, start with the front of your hair and twist sections into the head-band (see video) – it should start to look like a funky hair up! When all of the hair is twisted into the headband, gently spray some more texture spray before leaving for a few hours. Then, unwrap the sections to reveal luscious curls/waves!
Use hair rollers
Ideal for: all hair types
For those beautiful hollywood curls, hair rollers are the way to go. While this method does require more time and effort, the results are definitely worth it.
Hair rollers are best used on freshly washed, damp hair. Section your hair evenly and roll each section from the bottom upwards, securing with a bobby pin or clip. Leave these in for at least a few hours, or overnight if possible. When you’re ready, gently unravel each section before setting with your favourite hairspray.
When it comes to trialing these different methods to see which works best for you, make sure you’re using the best products for the job. The products you use can be the difference maker between gorgeous silky beach waves and a frizzy knotty mess!
