In an ideal world, our locks would look and feel amazing all year around – however, as NZ progresses into winter, the cold can really take a toll on our hair.
The icy temperatures, wind and rain, combined with central indoor heating can easily lead to dull, dry hair that’s susceptible to damage.
To help you achieve healthy hair and minimise the harsh effects of cold weather, we’ve put together our top winter hair care tips.
Avoid frequent hair washing
Are you guilty of washing your hair every day? If so, it’s time to make some changes to your winter hair care routine. By over washing your hair, you’re stripping it of its vital natural oils that are there to keep your hair protected and moisturized – which is vital during colder months.
Try and limit your washes to two or three times a week – this will not only prevent stripping your hair of its natural oils, but it will minimise the amount of heat styling in your routine.
Don’t wash your hair in hot water
While it may be tempting during the winter season to crank the temperature of your shower up, you should avoid washing your hair in very hot water.
Hot water can dry out our locks, and cause damage to those with extra sensitive scalps. It’s best to wash/rinse your hair in cool or warm water.
Keep your hair and scalp well moisturised
During these colder months, central indoor heating will likely suck the moisture out of your hair, drying it out and possibly leaving you with a dry and flaky scalp.
Hair oils and leave-in conditioners are essential during this time, and can help effectively combat dryness. Be sure to use a leave-in conditioner after washing and styling your hair. You can also apply a small amount of hair oil – such as argan oil or sweet almond oil – to both your scalp and ends when they are feeling a bit dry.
Avoid excessive heat styling
We all know that heated styling tools are a major cause of dry damaged hair – but when your hair is already in a fragile state due to cold weather, excessive heat can amplify this problem.
To keep your hair as healthy and moisturised as possibly, we recommend putting the heated tools down… or at least, minimise your use of them. Try embracing your natural hair texture and let it air-dry instead – just use a few drops of oil or serum to tame any frizz.
Get your hair trimmed regularly
Whether your hair is short or you’re wanting to grow it out, it’s important to keep on top of your regular trims. The cold winter weather can easily make the ends of your hair dry and brittle; regular trims can help keep your hair in good condition, while also reducing the chance of breakage and split ends.
