With the summer now in full swing, it’s a given that our locks will experience some harsh conditions this season. Summer is the one season of the year where it’s important to give our hair some extra TLC – not only to reduce frizziness, but to ensure your hair is kept in optimum health as well.

To get you started, we’ve gathered together our best hair care tips for maintaining healthy hair during the summer season.

Protect your hair

When you step out into the hot summer, do you apply sunscreen to protect your skin? It makes sense to ensure your skin is protected from the sun’s harsh UV rays… but what about your hair?

Many people don’t realize the damage that can be done by the sun – it can literally fry both your scalp and hair! It can also dry out your hair, leading to dry and brittle locks.

To protect your hair from the sun, it’s important to invest in a quality protectant product. These products work to not only protect your hair from the sun, but to maintain the hair’s vitality and moisture.

If you don’t have a protectant at the ready next time you head outside, be sure to pop on a hat or hair scarf.

Hydrate your hair

Our bodies aren’t the only thing that need hydration during summer – your hair needs plenty of hydration too! With the summer season bringing extra humidity and heat, your hair will be hydrating now more than ever before.

There are a number of ways to keep your hair hydrated, one of them being to introduce a deep conditioning treatment into your wash routine. Invest in a quality salon mask, and apply to your hair at least once a week.

It’s best to keep your mask on as long as possible – you can leave it in your hair overnight, or even apply before you head out to the pool or beach!

Reduce your hair washing

Did you know that washing your hair too often can result in your locks being stripped of its natural oils? Not only does this stimulate additional oil production, it can also make you feel like you need to wash your hair even more.

Supermarket hair products can also strip your hair of its natural oils – so as well as reducing how often you wash your hair, be sure to use quality products too. Although salon products seem a lot more expensive than supermarket products, it’s likely that you’ll use less of it due to the concentrated ingredients, meaning the products last much longer.

Cut back on the hot styling tools

How often do you use heated styling tools on your hair? If you tend to pick up your hairdryer, curling wand or straighteners on a daily basis, it’s time to give your hair a much needed break!

The summer season is a great time to try embracing your natural hair texture. With big beachy waves being a hot trend during the summer time, you can forget about trying to maintain that straight and sleek style you had all winter!

Take this chance to stop relying on your hot styling tools, and opt for comfortable, loose and care-free styles this season. Try experimenting with heatless styling options, like big braids and messy buns – keep these in overnight for gorgeous waves in the morning!
