When was the last time you thought about, or purchased a new hairbrush? When it comes to brushing your locks, it’s important that you’re using the right brush for your hair type. As there is tension and hair pulling involved, finding the right brush can help to avoid hair breakage.

If you’re spending good money on quality hair services and products, you should be using the correct type of brush, so you don’t spoil the hair care process. It’s the equivalent of spending hundreds on your hair colour, only to go home and use a cheap supermarket shampoo and conditioner.

But with so many types of brushes available, it can be difficult to know which will work best for your individual hair type. To help you make an informed decision, we’ve listed the most common types of hairbrushes and what hair types they’ll work best for.

The Sculpting Brush

Hair style: any
Best for: styling wet hair

The sculpting brush is perfect if you’re blow drying your hair at home, but haven’t yet mastered how to control a round brush.

The bristles help to soften and smooth the hair, while also reducing static once it’s fully tried.

The Paddle Brush

Hair type: curly and knotty hair
Best for: detangling

The paddle brush – also known as a “racket” brush – is a great tool for detangling both wet and dry hair. Especially good for curly hair, the wide spaced bristles help to reduce hair breakage and also prevent frizz.

As well as being used to carry out plain brushing, it can be used in conjunction with a hair dryer to help straighten hair.

The Natural Boar Brush

Hair type: fine to medium hair
Best for: styling dry hair

The natural boar brush works a treat to help stimulate the scalp as well as distribute oils through your hair. It’s also the key to getting that soft, brushed-out texture, such as vintage waves.

It should only be used on dry hair, so that the humidity doesn’t damage the fibres.

The Metal Round Brush

Hair type: any
Best for: styling wet or dry hair

The sparse bristles of the metal round brush moves through hair quickly and easily, creating less tension than their boar counterparts. The metal base of the brush heats up like an iron, making it easier to tame and style thick hair.

It’s great for heat-styling both wet and dry hair. Just be careful not to overdo it, as it can damage and weaken fine hair.

The Tangle Teezer

Hair type: medium to thick
detangling wet or dry hair

The tangle teezer is renown for getting knots out of thick hair – however, it offers even more benefits.

People with medium to fine hair can benefit from the tangle teezer by using it for a light scalp massage in the last step of styling – this can create some serious volume!

The Denman Brush

Hair type: curly, medium and thick hair
Best for: defining curls and wet detangling

The denman brush can be a bit of a hit or miss for many people. While some claim its detangling abilities are second to none, others find that it adds more frizz to their locks.

The brush actually allows you to add or remove rows, depending on your length. So once you’ve customised the brush to suit your hair, it’ll allow you to style your locks like a dream.
