Black Pearl & Co - Balayage by Laura

Balayage – it’s the celebrity hair colour trend that everyone’s talking about! Although balayage has been around for a while, this timeless technique has crept its way back into being one of the most requested hair colours in hair salons today. This easy maintenance, sun-kissed look can brighten up your look regardless of what length and colour your hair may currently be.

Known as an alternative to highlighting with foils, the balayage method involves “colour sweeping” or painting the hair strands by hair (“hair painting”). This technique helps to create a natural, beachy sun-kissed look that requires less maintenance than other standard types of colouring.

The greatest feature about balayage is that the look can be achieved on all shades of hair colour – however, this can make it difficult to decide which balayage shade will work best for you.

While we always recommend popping into the salon to have a chat with one of our stylists about what you’re wanting to achieve with your colour, we’ve listed some balayage info below to help get you started on deciding your balayage colour.

Balayage for brunettes

For darker hair, balayage highlights are generally achieved through a high lift tint that has a violet base to help rid orange and brassy tones from your hair. Brunettes don’t necessarily have to platinum blonde balayage highlights for that beautiful sun-kissed look – a caramel ash is the perfect compromise. Here’s a few brunette celebrities rocking the balayage look:

Balayage for redheads

While you may think that the balayage technique is a no-no for redheads – this is not the case! Red hair comes in many different shades, so the main difficulty is selecting which highlight shade will work best for you. The ultimate goal is to enhance the already beautiful red tones – aiming for golden tones over copper tones will give a more natural look. Check out these beautiful redhead balayage looks:

Balayage for blondes

From platinum to ashy, strawberry to golden – there are endless options when it comes to what shade of blonde highlights to use for the balayage technique. The great thing about having naturally blonde hair for the balayage technique is that there is less bleaching/lightening involved to achieve the sun-kissed look. It also allows for easier growing out of colour and gives your hair a break from over-treating and processing. Here’s some beautiful examples of blonde balayage:
